THE MUST-ASK QUESTIONS FOR YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER
Choosing your wedding photographer is a big decision, and it’s natural to feel a little overwhelmed. To make things easier, I’ve put together a list of key questions to ask any photographer you’re considering.
These questions will help you feel confident in your choice and ensure you find the perfect fit for your wedding day.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY STYLE?
Your wedding photos should feel like you. That’s why it’s important to ask your photographer how they’d describe their style. Some lean more towards natural, candid moments, while others focus on posed or artistic shots. Knowing this will help you decide if their approach is the right fit for your day.
HOW DO YOU HANDLE CONTRACTS AND AGREEMENTS?
Having a contract isn’t about making things complicated—it’s about giving you confidence. A good contract clearly explains what’s included, how everything works, and what you can expect. It protects both you and your photographer, so you can relax knowing everything is set out in writing.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THE PHOTOGRAPHER IS ILL?
Although it’s very rare, unexpected situations can happen. A professional photographer will always have a plan in place to make sure you’re covered. Ask how they handle emergencies and whether they have a trusted backup ready to step in if needed.
ARE YOU FULLY INSURED?
A professional photographer takes every detail seriously—including insurance. Having the right coverage in place protects not only their equipment but also you and your guests. It’s an extra layer of reassurance that allows you to enjoy your day without worry.
I carry full business, equipment, and liability insurance, so you can feel confident your wedding day is fully protected.
DO YOU HANDLE MULTIPLE WEDDINGS IN ONE WEEKEND?
Some studios or photographers take on multiple weddings in a single weekend, which can stretch their resources. I only photograph one wedding at a time, so I can dedicate all my energy to your day, capturing every moment with care and attention.
ARE YOU AVAILABLE ON OUR WEDDING DATE—CAN YOU HOLD OUR DATE?
I work exclusively with a limited number of couples each year, because every wedding I photograph deserves my full attention, dedication, and heart. I don’t churn out dozens of weddings; instead, I focus on capturing each story beautifully and with care.
Because of this, I can’t simply hold a date indefinitely unless you secure a deposit—but when we do work together, you have my complete commitment to your wedding day and to creating timeless images that truly reflect you.
WILL I NEED TO PAY A DESPOIT TO BOOK MY WEDDING?
Because I take on only a select number of weddings each year, a deposit is required to reserve your date. This ensures your wedding is my sole focus and allows me to turn away other bookings so I can pour my full heart into capturing your day.
Securing your date means you have my complete attention and dedication from start to finish.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE, AND DO YOU HAVE BACKUPS?
I use professional-grade camera equipment to ensure your wedding is captured beautifully, and I always have backup cameras, lenses, and essential gear on hand. While top-of-the-line equipment isn’t the only thing that matters, having reliable tools and spares ensures that nothing is left to chance on your wedding day.
My goal is to capture every moment without interruption, so you can relax knowing your memories are in safe hands.
DO YOU OFFER EXTRA COVERAGE IF THE WEDDING RUNS LATE?
Your wedding day is full of unpredictable, beautiful moments, and sometimes the celebration runs longer than expected. My contract specifies the number of hours included, but if you need me to stay, I’m happy to offer additional coverage.
Any extra hours are charged at a clearly outlined rate, which we can discuss ahead of time. This way, you can relax knowing I’ll be there to capture every special moment without any surprises.
WHEN WILL WE RECEIVE OUR PHOTOS AND ALBUM?
Every photographer has a different timeline for producing and delivering your images. Some may promise photos within a day or a week, but these are often unedited or minimally processed. For photography that is carefully edited and polished, delivery usually takes longer—but it ensures your images look their absolute best.
I have developed a consistent production schedule that allows me to deliver beautifully finished images in a timely manner:
1–2 weeks for engagements, portraits, headshots, and other smaller sessions.
2–4 weeks for weddings and receptions.
This schedule gives me the time to carefully review, edit, and perfect each image, so you receive a collection that truly reflects your day and the emotions captured.
HOW WILL YOU DRESS FOR OUR WEDDING?
While a photographer plays an important role on the wedding day, they should not be a distraction. It’s important that they dress appropriately and blend in with guests. For formal weddings or ceremonies with cultural or religious considerations, certain colours or attire may be expected.
Professional wedding photographers often choose smart, understated clothing—such as black trousers and a dark shirt—to remain discreet while capturing the day’s moments as naturally as possible.
CAN WE MEET IN PERSON OR HAVE A VIDEO CALL BEFORE BOOKING?
A good wedding photographer should always be happy to meet you in person or have a video call before you book. This gives you the chance to get to know them, ask questions, and see if their personality and approach feel like the right fit for your wedding day.
Meeting or speaking beforehand can help you feel more confident in your decision and ensure that you’ll be comfortable with the person capturing such important moments.
HOW DOES PAYMENT WORK, AND IS A DEPOSIT REQUIRED?
Payment policies are an important part of booking a photographer. A deposit is required to secure your wedding date, because this ensures the photographer can turn down other clients and dedicate themselves fully to your day.
The deposit also provides partial coverage should anything unexpected occur, since the photographer might’ve turned down other prospective clients.
The remaining balance is typically due one month before the wedding. This timing allows couples to focus on final preparations during the busy lead-up to their day without worrying about last-minute payments, while giving the photographer the assurance that everything is settled in advance.
